This name originated in Annaly and from the earliest times of which we have records down to the present day the name O'Tormey has been associated with Co. Longford and the adjacent counties of Westmeath and Cavan. Gillaíosa Ó Tormaigh, Bishop of Ardagh from 1232 to 1237, was of sufficent importance to be mentioned by nearly all the annalists. References to the name in the Elizabethan Fiants relate to the O'Reilly and Nugent country in Cavan and Westmeath, and modern statistics place it in the area running eastwards from Granard in Co. Longford.
